Sustainability of NHS at core of Wales Health Science Conference

The sustainability of the NHS was the focus of the recent Wales Health Science Conference 2025.

The conference, which was held at Venue Cymru in Llandudno over 15 and 16 May, was hosted by Healthcare Science Cymru and the Welsh Scientific Advisory Committee (WSAC).

The two-day event brought together healthcare leaders, education institutions, policymakers, and decision-makers from across Wales to provide cutting-edge discussions, and opportunities to explore innovative research that will help build a sustainable NHS in Wales.

Topics including the NHS workforce now and, in the future, tackling cancer survival rates in Wales, neurodivergence in the workforce, and transforming services at a national level were discussed during the conference.

Speakers included:

· Jason Lintern, Health Innovation Lead, Welsh Government,

· Dr Rhodri Griffiths Director of Innovation, Adoption, Life Sciences Hub Wales Strategic Workforce Planner at Health Education and Improvement Wales (HEIW),

· Dr Sarah Bant, the Associate Director of Healthcare Science Workforce Transformation at HEIW,

· Professor Chris Hopkins, the new President-Elect of the Academy for Healthcare Science, who chaired the first day of the conference.

Among those who took part in the event were Public Health Wales’s Public Health Genomics (PHG) programme team alongside Genomics Partnership Wales (GPW), All Wales Medical Genomics Service (AWMGS) and Wales Gene Park which collaborated as part of the Genomics Strategy for Wales.

During the two days PHG spoke with researchers, students and other attendees to share more about their work and spark an interest in genomics and the Public Health Genomics Programme.
